What is a retainer?

A retainer is used after orthodontic treatment as a tooth stabiliser, i.e., to keep the front teeth in their current position. After treatment with invisible braces or other orthodontic methods, such a retainer should continue to be worn at night for at least 6-12 months. This is another transparent dental splint with a higher layer thickness.

In the course of treatment, the teeth are moved in the bone to achieve an optimal position. This movement of bone and tissue stretches the periodontium. The teeth continue to be significantly more mobile than usual shortly after treatment. The retainer prevents a possible "recurrence," a return to the original position.
